Thumbnail of that pic looked like a carburetor for a gas R/C car. But now I see Audi and VW imprints. That must be expensive. What is it?

It’s the anti shudder valve of my 3.0 TDI A4, it’s basically a throttle body that stays open most of the time when the engine is running and close for 1 minute when the engine is stopped to avoid the engine shuddering when stopping but also to stop engines running away (if it would happen) .
In normal use it’s also supposed to be at least partially closed when the EGR is opened and work along the intake flaps to blend fresh air and exhaust gases but the flaps are disabled on mine and at the moment i unplugged the MAF to disable the EGR (ghetto fix, i need to remap the car with the EGR properly off as it’s not even starting if i simply put a blocking plate) as the intake is a horror show and i also have light-gray smoke at idle when i have the MAF plugged (but no power loss so it’s not the MAF itself) :
I have a story to post (when i cleaned the upper intake) that i have been procrastinating for 3 or 4 months with thi s picture among others.

Oh my. Thank you. These modern engines have gotten so complicated. Changed plugs and w ires in Sully last week and noticed it doesn’t have a distributor. Who’d a thunk that’d ever happen?

Well, i never had a car with a distributor :)
These valves has been on TDIs since at least the late 90s and at worse it st ays open and the car is still driving normally, just not stopping nicely (as it’s a diesel it will continue to run a little with what little gasoline is still there and shudder as it won’t be a good combustion .
